My approach, in private lessons, is to teach students how to play the songs they want to play, so I have created a “1st Songs” format with the Chorus and 1st Verse in lead sheet form on the left side of the page and standard chord charts on the right.
I add the strum patterns on the sheet after the student has learned the chord transitions. Then we can move from basic strumming to strumming & picking to fingerpicking, if applicable.
I usually can keep the songs in a 3 chord format and get a lot of concepts taught from a simple song they already know. It does make it a little easier if students don’t have to learn the song AND how to play it.
Four popular songs that many of my students like to learn are Ring of Fire, Sweet Home Alabama, Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door, and Silent Night. Click the orange link for a PDF sample lead sheet. 1st Song Sample

Steve, and his bands, have always given back to the community, supporting Special Needs Families, Christian Outreach, Food Pantries, Homeless Shelters and Medical Research.
As a songwriter and registered artist with BMI, Steve’s songwriting and gig sets span the Blues, Rock, Folk, Country and Christian genres.
2009 was the start of a busy solo performing schedule as well as sharing his love of music by teaching both Guitar and Live Performance Techniques. Steve teaches his guitar students to play the music THEY want to play, right from the start, without getting bogged down with music theory. With Live Performance Techniques lessons, students learn how to move from the living room to a live stage.
